Halliday Wine Companion 2024

Coughlan Estate Field Blend 2022

“A really pleasing, easy-drinking white with (a) distinct personality that elevates the experience… It's got a tight, lightly chalky texture and flavours extend long on briny acidity. All of this adds up to a delicious, refreshing, personality-imbued drink.” Mike Bennie

The much anticipated, and best-selling, Halliday Wine Companion 2024 by James Halliday has hit bookstores and we are over the moon to have three of our Coughlan Estate wines included in this year’s list.

Led by respected wine critic and vigneron James Halliday AM, editor at large, the Halliday Wine Companion is the work of a dedicated team of wine authorities, who collectively taste more than 9000 wines each year.

The 2021 Chenin Blanc and 2022 Field Blend both received scores of 92 in the guide. The Chenin was applauded as a delight to drink and a bottle to get stuck into. On the Field Blend Mike Bennie said

“A really pleasing, easy-drinking white with (a) distinct personality that elevates the experience… It's got a tight, lightly chalky texture and flavours extend long on briny acidity. All of this adds up to a delicious, refreshing, personality-imbued drink.”

Our talented winemakers Bruce Dukes and Remi Guise are the firepower in our corner - with the 2022 Estate Rosé being awarded 91 in the guide.

“This is an easy-drinking, crisp and clean rosé. It's strawberries and cream but crunchier than that, though there are strong elements of sweet fruit and vanillin character. It has decent length, a sense of purity and energy, evenness, flow and freshness. It feels well made, is the message. A good expression here”, said Mike.

With a wine career spanning over 50 years, James Halliday is an unmatched authority on all aspects of the wine industry, and for more than 30 years, was among the most senior and active wine judges in Australia. In 2010 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to the wine industry. James has written or contributed to over 80 books on wine since 1970 and has written a weekly wine column for Australian newspapers since 1978.

The esteemed Halliday Companion Tasting Team is made up of eight other panellists, including chief editor Campbell Mattinson. Each authority is responsible for reviewing the wines from specific regions around the country, which allows for continuity, connection and specialist expertise.

The Halliday Wine Companion 2024 by James Halliday is available at all leading bookstores and retailers around Australia and online.
