DRINK CHENIN BLANC DAY

As if we need an excuse to crack open a bottle of chenin. But, the world of wine has spoken, and so today we celebrate Drink Chenin Blanc Day.

Chenin blanc is a white wine grape variety native to the Loire Valley in France. The first records of chenin blanc date back to the 1500s, but it is believed to have originated many centuries earlier. The modern history of chenin blanc begins in the 17th century, when it travelled from France to South Africa to become a hallmark white of the warmer region. Traditionally, the acidity is higher with distinctive texture, it is somewhat of a chameleon variety. The final resemblance of any one chenin is a true reflection of the vineyard and the winemaking process.

Here in Western Australia we are in the thick of the chenin renaissance. A trailblazing group of winemakers have elevated the formerly uncool and undesirable varietal to rock-star status in just a couple of vintages. This past summer was a true season of celebration for chenin blanc in Australia, moving its way up wine lists around the country given its uncompromising ability to work with a wide variety of cuisines.

At Coughlan Estate, our single-site chenin comes from some of the oldest vines in the Geographe Wine Region. Remi Guise, our Senior Winemaker, builds the depth of flavour and textural complexity in our chenin - highlighting the natural structures of the fruit. Our award-winning 2022 Chenin Blanc profiles yellow peach, shaved almond, wet slate and nougat on the nose. A generous palate of white pears, jasmine and green apples, boasting quenching acidity, minerality and pois is presented, before a textural and engaging finish laced with hints of lanolin, limes and dried thyme. The bright acidity, interesting textures and varying sugar levels make chenin blanc an excellent wine to pair with food. Working well with almost any course, chenin blanc will drink beautifully with hard and soft cheeses, meats including richer fishes, chicken, turkey, pork and veal, a plethora of vegetable dishes, salads and herbs. It also works beautifully with slightly spicier cuisines, and dishes with a fruit or sweet element.

Cheers!
